The Lens is an independent newspaper journalist organization in town that is doing a demo of their new software called the Vault, which collects data regarding the NOLA government. They have gathered city contracts in the database. It should be fun and interesting to hear more about the project!
Interesting story about Steve Blank's Lean Start Up model being adopted by the NIH. Ron teaches the lean start up model in his business class for SISE students. We use it with our own company, Limited Times. We have believed for a long time that academia should create models/versions for the resources available and the ways of working within the university. It is great that there is serious traction in the sciences with the NIH use and endorsement. We think it is great for the non-sciences as well—law, theatre, dance, the social sciences, just to name a few.
Elizabeth was downtown at Launchpad today, meeting with a software developer. What a cool working space. This is one of many of the co-working spaces available in New Orleans. They are all so different in vibe and feel. It was great to visit this space.
Visited with Julia Stewart and Andrea Chen at Propeller today about ideas for the Fall 2014. As always, delightful and productive. They have some really really interesting plans afoot.
Ron met with NOLABA. This is an interesting group doing a lot to foster business development in New Orleans. (HT Jason Seidman and Colin Grussing. Thanks for the intro!) We think this could be a great connection for LCI and look forward to more discussions.
Ron was on WBOK today talking with host Max Walters about the LCI Initiative. They took calls and talked with people from the New Orleans community! An artist... and someone interested in connecting more to the African American community with LCI. Great topics of discussion. Such a great experience! Great to be out and about!
We presented LCI to a crowd of about 30 at BarCampNola 7, hosted at Tulane University yesterday. We had such a great time. The room was filled with all kinds of people with many, many interesting backgrounds. They instantly understand the idea of what we were trying to do, and we had an hour long conversation about everything from dog parks (and how to help get more of them in the city), to heath insurance (and how students could help with many issues facing New Orleanians), to blighted property (always a big topic here in the city). We were thrilled that Jason Seidman and Colin Grussing of 52businsses suggested we present. We made new friends in abundance.
Colin Grussing and Jason Seidman from 52businesses appeared on MSNBC this week on News Nation with Tamron Hall, and LCI was featured as one of the businsses they are helping!!! (News Nation did get our name wrong, calling it Low Culture Initiative, but that's the press for you!) And we know, we are not a business exactly but we are helping businssess, and Colin and Jason loved the challenge of helping us better present all of the moving parts that will be LCI starting in the Fall 2014.
Watch the interview!
We were honored this week to be chosen by 52businesses as Business #17 in their year-long march of helping one business a week get up and running. We're excited to be working with founders Jason Seidman and Collin Grussing and the talent, experience, and resources they bring!
